Origin of Ironwood carvings
Dates back to hundreds of years, two of the predominant tribes in the state of Sonora Mexico began with the ironwood carving: The seris, mostly located in "Isla Tiburón" (Shark Island), "Isla San Esteban", "Punta chueca" and "Desemboque", and the Yaquis, settled in the south area of Sonora.
We can found some concepts to name this process: "Ironwood carving", "Iroonwood figures" and many others. In this text we prefer say "figures".
For the elaboration they were inspired in the flora and fauna of the Sonoran desert environment: Cactus, fish, turtles, sharks, roadrunners and eagles and many others. Some time later the carvings began to be manufactured in other regions of the state by non-tribes people, but we cannot say that the quality of the figures was reduced, because if we analyze the elaboration proceess we will conclude that people who make this carvigns are genuine artists.
The procces at that times (some much years ago) was logically more rudimentary. A tree trunk of the approximate size of the figure was cut with an axe, for the carving process they used elements like stones and glasses. They were polished using sand an their finishes were made with animal fat. Regularly the finishing process was made by women of the tribe.
